TAS in Session: Matt & Kim, Part One
Does living in Brooklyn for 5 years give you the ability to say you're a Brooklyn-based band? With every band saying they're from BK, we think that after four and a half years, you're officially able to state your case. Matt & Kim, who dropped by for a TAS live session, have clocked in over five years, so they pass our neighborhood checklist.
Matt (via Vermont) and Kim (via Rhode Island) met while studying at Pratt Institute back in 2004. They didn't meet exchanging notes in class, but at a warehouse party. Early on, they had no real intention of becoming full-time musicians. But Kim had always wanted to play the drums, and so she bought a kit (she explains this scenario in simplistic fashion, like it was no big deal). Matt's neighbor in Vermont gave him an old Yamaha keyboard with some beefy synth sounds nearly six years ago and he still plays the same keyboard to this day.
The two practiced in their apartment in a space the size of your work cubicle. Living the dream, eating ramen noodles and playing music at warehouses off Grand and Myrtle Avenue is how they got their start. Little by little, the energy and passion projected on stage earned them a loyal local following. And there's no stopping their career path now! The duo (and couple) stopped by our studios to perform a few tunes from the second studio album (recorded in Matt's parents' house in Vermont) entitled Grand, appropriately named after the street they live on in Brooklyn. The two are happy, funny, and downright nice people, so give them a shot. You don't have to wear white-rimmed sunglasses to like them, either.
From the left: Jeff K, Kim, Matt. We're pretty sure.
