9/11 Survivor Tree Moved Back To WTC Site
The heavily damaged tree has been nursed back to health.
The Callery Pear tree, which has come to be known as the "Survivor Tree," has been recovering at a Parks Department facility in the Bronx. New York City Mayor Bloomberg and 9/11 survivors replanted the tree today in Lower Manhattan.
The mayor said the tree's trunk was "scorched” by the burning debris that engulfed the site, and "its crown had been completely blown off reducing its branches to charred stumps." The mayor said that like New York City itself, the tree's odds for recovery seemed long, but "there were lots of us who knew we could beat those odds."
The tree was originally planted at the trade center complex in the 1970s. Currently, over a hundred trees are planted at the 9/11 Memorial Plaza. Bloomberg said plans remain on course to open the 9/11 memorial and museum in time for the 10th anniversary of the attacks.
