Active Bronx Firehouse Given Landmark Status
Firehouse among five in NYC given landmark status
A turn-of-the-century, New York City firehouse is being honored as a symbol of safety and service. The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission sited the distinctive architecture of the 1894 building as a reason for it's landmark status. Jose Lizardi has lived in the Bathgate neighborhood for 19 years. He says he hopes having the status will encourage officials to take better care of the active firehouse.
"Nobody is fixing it. It has damages and everything. And nobody is protecting it now. Being a landmark can protect it."
The FDNY says repair work is performed on firehouses as needed. The Bronx firehouse was one of five, given landmark status yesterday.
