After Shots Fired Near Capitol Hill, Local Lawmakers: We're Safe

The United States Capitol was locked down Tuesday afternoon after gunshots were heard in front of the building. The area has since been reopened. Additional details were unclear Thursday afternoon.

As local police continue to investigate the incident, New York lawmakers announced on the Internet that they and their aides were safe.

Rep. Tim Bishop: “I and my staff are unhurt and sheltering in place in DC office as directed by Capitol Police. Deeply distressed by shooting on Capitol Hill.”

Rep. Carolyn Maloney: “Capitol lockdown over; incident stabilized thx to Capitol Police and Secret Service. My staff and I are safe but thoughts with those injured.”

Rep. Charles Rangel: “Was at the Capitol when shooting happened but now am safely back at the office and OK.” – w picture attached

Rep. Chris Gibson: “Thanks Capitol Police for your work. Shelter in place lifted. Pray all okay. Thanks to those who reached out to make sure our staff was safe.”

Rep. Paul Tonko: “Lockdown in DC lifted and my staff and I are safe. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. Very grateful for Capitol Police and our first responders.”

Rep. Richard Hanna: “Lockdown over. We’re safe. Sheltered in place with my DC staff and mailman who was in our office when shots were fired.”

Rep. Louise Slaughter: “My staff and I are safe. My thoughts are with US Capitol Police and law enforcement working to protect the public.”

Rep. Chris Collins: “All staff is accounted for and safe. Thoughts are with Capitol Police.”
