Bronx Community Unites Following Theft of School Computers
The recent theft of computers at P.S. 73 in the Highbridge section of the Bronx has left community leaders and parents frustrated, but not deterred.
The school year is ending on a sour note for P.S. 73 in the Highbridge section of the Bronx, due to a theft of 100 laptop computers, but parents and community leaders are vowing to turn things around.
Pastor Winsell Jackson of the Highbridge Community Church reflected much of the community’s feelings on the matter. “This was a violation of the success of our children. Those hoodlums, who came in here and stole, stole from our kids. They tried to impede the progress of their future, but our children, this community, are resilient.”
Community leader Chauncey Young is calling for people to step up to replace the stolen laptops. “If we could get somebody to donate computers, whether it is the Yankees, whether Dell wants to give computers, whether Apple wants to give computers, because we can’t afford to not have computers for this community.”
P.S. 73 is located in the nation's poorest congressional district, and advocates say students will be at a disadvantage without the computers.
The computers, along with other material, were stolen in two separtate robberies last month. So far no arrests have been made.
