Brooklyn's Waterfront Gets An Industrial Makeover
Officials break ground on a new recycling center at the 30th Street Pier in Sunset Park.
A new environmentally friendly recycling center is coming to Brooklyn's waterfront. On Monday, construction began on the new Sims Municipal Recycling Facility at the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal in Sunset Park.
"I am extremely happy," said Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez who attended the ground-breaking ceremony. "This is a way to green our waterfronts and to believe in our waterfront."
The state-of-the-art recycling center will process two-thirds of New York City's metal, glass, and plastic. It is also a key part of the City's effort to achieve PlaNYC's goals. "This is a major step in saying we will have an industrial waterfront," said Congressman Jerrold Nadler. "We will have jobs in the city for people without college diplomas and we will improve the way we deal with our waste management.”
The Sims Municipal Recycling Facility is also expected to reduce truck emissions since recyclables will be delivered by rail and barge. The facility is expected to open in December 2011.
