Storied recording engineer Eddie Kramer discusses tales of the tape and classic tracks from his great records. Kramer is visiting on the occasion of The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Live at the Hollywood Bowl, August 18, 1967.
The new album offers a previously unreleased performance of the band on the eve of the release of their debut album, Are You Experienced, and joins that LP and others in the Jimi Hendrix catalog that were engineered by Kramer. He also built Electric Lady Studios in New York on Jimi’s commission, and has much to say about the genius guitarist’s flamboyance, humor, and humanity.
But Kramer’s story stretches well beyond Hendrix to Woodstock, Joe Cocker’s Mad Dogs & Englishmen, the great early run of Led Zeppelin albums, and Kiss. Through his apprenticeship at London’s Olympic Studios, Kramer worked with The Rolling Stones, Traffic, and one particular Beatles session at the studio when EMI (Abbey Road) wasn’t available, and where his tech team pulled all the stops.
