Connecticut Governor Malloy Outlines Goals for the New Year

Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy delivered his annual State of the State address Wednesday in Hartford.

A number of issues were discussed in his speech, including gun violence and the economy.  The Governor's speech had an emotional start as he honored the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings.  Malloy demanded lawmakers work to improve school safety.

"We must also ask ourselves what is our responsibility to those we've lost, to one another, to the children, and the future generations," said Malloy. "Let us do everything in our power to make sure Connecticut never suffers a loss such as this."

He added that a handgun on the "hip of every teacher" and "security guards outside of every classroom" was not the answer to keep schools and communities safe.

In addition, the Governor also said he wants to boost the state economy by making Connecticut more competitive for businesses and creating more jobs.  Malloy said lawmakers need to help people get back to work.

"Until every person in this state who wants a job and could find one, we have more work to do."

Malloy outlined other goals including education reform, energy costs, and tackling a $1 billion deficit.
