Cultivating Music in the Bronx Music Hall

While the Bronx is known as the birthplace of Hip Hop, Elena Martinez also says it’s home to many other genres like traditional West African music and Latin jazz. Martinez is the Co-Artistic Director of the new Bronx Music Hall in the Melrose neighborhood of the South Bronx. She wants to showcase local artists that you wouldn’t necessarily hear on a mainstream radio station or on your average Spotify playlist. WFUV’s Lainey Nguyen heads to the venue to hear Gambian artist Salieu Suso play the kora and more about Martinez’s goals for the space.
