Ground Breaks on New Staten Island Neighborhood
The New Stapleton Waterfront will bring shops, housing, and jobs to SI's North Shore
A Staten Island Naval Base that has been abandoned for 20 years will soon be home to a new waterfront neighborhood.
Officials broke ground on the New Stapleton Waterfront Development Plan on Thursday. It will include new restaurants and shopping centers, along with 900 units of housing.
Staten Island Borough President James Molinaro was there to help kick off the project. He said the location's view can't be beat.
"This is the greatest spot in the world. Just turn around and look, what do you see? You see the grestest city in the world. No where else can you see the greatest city in the world but from this area," Molinaro explained.
The waterfront neighborhood will be protected by state-of-the-art technology to prevent future storm damage. Staten Island Council Member Debi Rose thinks the project is nothing shy of a rebirth.
"Welcome to the Renaissance of the North Shore," she said.
Developers hope the new project will retain some of Staten Island's younger population. Mayor Bloomberg claims it will bring over 1,000 jobs to the neighborhood.
