Lawmaker Pushes New York City Board of Elections to get Digital

New York City Councilman James Vacca wants election information sent to smart phones.

Councilman James Vacca says it's time for the Board of Elections to start sending election information straight to a person's smart phone.

He plans to introduce a bill this week that would require the Board to inform voters of polling sites, voting deadlines, and other election information through text messages and emails.

He announced today at a news conference that voters need to be updated on a regular basis.

"Polling sites often change at the last minute," Vacca said. "We have to bring the Board of Elections into the 21st century. Today people are using email. Today people are getting texts. They give you immediate notification. They go right to your pocket."

Currently, polling site information is only sent through the regular mail. Vacca says the problem with mailing election information is that it's too slow and can arrive late.

Voters have the option if they would like to have the digital notifications sent to them.
