National Security Campaign Expanded to Sports Events
National security officials are teaming up with major league sports to improve safety at stadiums.
Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano announced the new partnership in Manhattan Monday. It will expand the "If you see something, say something" campaign to sporting events. The PSAs will now be seen at stadiums and sporting arenas. The PSAs feature sports officials informing people about how to notify authorities. Napolitano said it's the public's job to help out with safety.
"It's the umps, it's the referees who are making the calls, they have to watch all the time, they have to be aware of the entire situation," said Napolitano. "We're asking members of public who are attending sporting events, if you see something, say something."
Napolitano added the new PSAs will reach millions of people across the U.S.
New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the original campaign was started back in 2002 and has been an effective counter-terrorism tool on bus and subway systems.
"Judging by the level of participation and familiarity, I think you have to declare this campaign is a success." said Kelly. "We certainly want to keep it on the public's radar screen."
Kelly said the city receives about 20,000 calls a year as a result of the program.
