New Bus Service In the Bronx Will Cut Travel Time for 20,000 Commuters
Mayor Bloomberg and NYC transportation officials announced the new Select Bus Bx41 Service on Webster Ave today
A new bus service in the Bronx will make travel along one busy shopping hub faster. Webster Avenue is home to a number of businesses and residencies. Department of Transportation Commissioner Jannete Sadik-Kahn says the new Bx 41 select bus will serve 20,000 riders per weekday along the busy street. She says there is a great need for a reliable transportation service in the area.
"71% of households in this area do not own a car, and yet, for decades Webster Avenue is really a subway deadzone," Sadik-Kahn spoke at a press conference today along with Mayor Bloomberg and MTA Commissioner Thomas Prendergast to announce the launch of the bus.
Bloomberg said there is a second purpose behind the new bus service.
"The service will not only make travel easier and faster in the Bronx. It's also central to our larger efforts to bring new life and economic strength to Webster Avenue," the Mayor said.
The select bus will cut riders' travel time by up to twenty percent. Like other select buses around the city, commuters pay before they get on the bus. The buses will also have transit signal priority so they hit more green lights than red on every trip.
