A New Park Comes to the South Bronx

For decades, Hunt's Point was known as the dumping site of the East Coast.  But a number of South Bronx groups, New York City agencies and community activists are transforming the area into a relaxing recreation zone. 

Visitors can celebrate the opening of Hunts Point Landing by fishing at the new pier, kayaking or riding along the bike lanes that connect the existing park with a number of other new open spaces. There is also a beautiful view of the Bronx and East Rivers.

"These spaces offer our neighborhood a place to breath and to enjoy peace and solitude," said Congressman Jose Serrano. 

The 1.5 acres of waterfront open space is part of The South Bronx Greenway plan to improve access to recreational opportunities in the Bronx.

"We've transformed this from a dead end into a park that is now full of life," said New York City Economic Development Corporation President Seth Pinsky.  "It's no longer a concrete jungle."

The project is also intended to offer a brighter future for residents and visitors to the area.

"You're going to hear stories about how their formative years were beautiful memories at Hunts Point Landing: biking around the South Bronx, seeing this amazing marker do its work, seeing the community redevelop," said Assembly Member Marcos Crespo.

The opening is one of five phases in the $48 million project.
