New Report Says Tri-State Area Seniors Are Not Safe Crossing the Street

A new report says senior citizens in the tri-state area are not safe crossing the street. 

The study by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign found high death rates for pedestrians over the age of sixty, especially on New York City streets.  WFUV's Stephanie Colombini has more.

You've got about forty seconds to cross Boston Road at the Waring Avenue intersection in the Bronx.  That may seem like plenty of time to most, but for some seniors, it's not nearly enough.  Richard is a senior citizen from the Bronx.  He says it's hard for him to rush to the other side with his walker before the countdown clock stops ticking.

"I see here on Boston Road, you get half-way across, and the light's changing already.  You know, I just pray, and hope they wait for me."

The study says the Bronx is the third most dangerous county in the region for pedestrians over sixty, with thirty fatalities between 2009 and 2011.  Queens and Brooklyn topped the list, each with fifty-one deaths.
