Organization Provides Kosher Food For Those In Need

Passover is one of the busiest times of year for the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty. 

By the end of the holiday, they expect to have distributed 2.6 million pounds of kosher food to about 50,000 households in all 5 boroughs. 

"The need for supplemental food in the city is tremendous," said Peter Brest, the Council's Chief Operations Officer, "We feed everyone who comes to the Jewish Community Councils that distribute the food."

Brest said many families are in need this year after losing homes in Superstorm Sandy. 

He added there's no shame in accepting help, "Many people who have worked before and have paid taxes for decades into the system have a right to get the benefits that would accrue to them as a result of being in poverty or temporarily displaced."

The Met Council has the largest kosher food program for the poor in the United States.
