President Obama Pitches Minimum Wage Hike in Connecticut
President Obama Pitches Minimum Wage Hike Tomorrow in Connecticut
President Obama's visiting New Britain, Connecticut tomorrow to continue his push to raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10.
Four New England governors will join him to make the pitch, including Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy. The President needs Congress' approval to implement the raise on a national level. But Governor Malloy's proposing to make it a reality in his state by 2017.
Connecticut currently has the nation's fourth highest minimum wage, at $8.70 an hour. Governor Malloy says that's not enough.
"We believe, in Connecticut, that no one should be working 40 hours a week and still live in poverty; and that's what's going on with a lower minimum wage...It just doesn't make sense," he said. "Let's give people a decent wage for 40 hours of work, and help them raise their families in our country."
The governor's proposal aims to gradually increase the wage over a three-year period, beginning in 2015.
