Seaport to See Change this Summer
The South Street Seaport's getting some new eats this summer. Brooklyn's so-called SmorgasBurg is bringing food vendors and drinks from their SmorgasBar concept to the Lower Manhattan tourist hotspot.
It's part of an effort called See/Change, meant to bring some life to the area still struggling after Superstorm Sandy. The storm brought serious flooding to the Seaport, and many of the ground floor shops are still shuttered from the damage.
Eric Demby with SmorgasBurg said they are hoping to expand the Seaport's appeal.
"We look at our SmorgasBurg project as attracting not only the tourists, who will be there anyway, but also bringing the workers from the neighborhood on their lunch hour and after work and also the residents - there's a lot of residents that live down there!"
Demby said those patrons can enjoy the summer weather.
"Food has this way of bringing people together," he said. "There's not that many places to eat and drink outside in New York City, surprisingly. So we have high hopes for this as an attraction that will also help the surrounding area."
The project's also bringing nighttime movies on rolled-out grass, pop-up shops in shipping containers, and various other events to the Seaport. See/Change starts Memorial Day weekend.
