Strike A Chord: Keeping Kids in Motion

Many parks around New York City run a program called Kids in Motion. It starts in the spring, and runs through the end of summer. By August, 125 parks will participate with games, sports, art and crafts and snacks for local kids.

Director of Citywide Fitness, Kendra Van Horn, says the program is designed to keep kids active in the summer months, when they don’t have recess or gym class in school.

“It’s just a way to keep kids active and provide a service to the community. So you know getting the kids out of their apartments, out of their homes, and outside enjoying nature, enjoying the community.”

May Hernandez lives near Tremont Park, one of the parks that participates in the Kids in Motion program. She says the park gets her out of her apartment.

“We buy food, and of course I run around with my little siblings and I play around. And mostly my mom and them they just sit down and watch us.”

Kids in Motion is open to kids of any age who want to get outside and play.
