Toro y Moi: 2015
Chaz Bundick, a.k.a. Toro y Moi, first gained popularity in 2009 through his dreamy single, “Blessa.” A year later, he released his full-length debut, Causers of This, which put him at the forefront of the “chillwave” movement where myriad artists began experimenting with synth-driven laptop sounds.
Chaz refuses to be pigeonholed into a single genre though. He has experimented with many different styles on his records, including R&B, pop, rock and dance, but the common thread seems to be the sound of the '70s. His latest album, What For?, may have the most obvious nods to this period of music.
Toro y Moi recently stopped by WFUV to talk with me about his new record. He also performed some of the new songs live in Studio A. We’ll hear that performance and conversation during this episode of FUV live.
