In Wake of Global Warnings, NYPD Boosts Local Security
Additional officers around iconic locations, worship sites.
Amid global travel warnings issued by the U.S. State Department and the closure of several embassies in the Muslim world, the New York Police Department has heightened security around the city. Additional officers have been assigned to patrol houses of worship, as well as iconic local sites, including the Empire State Building and the World Trade Center, according to the Associated Press.
“There’s a lack of specific information,” Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said on Saturday, according to the New York Post. He added: "[It’s] cause for concern.”
Intercepted "chatter" has indicated that a major terrorist attack is in the planning stages, the Associated Press reported.
The NYPD has not responded to a request for comment.
