WFUV Pop Quiz: Crystal Bowersox
Born in Elliston, Ohio, with a passion for music, Crystal Bowersox spent her days performing in local taverns and train stations. At 17 she traveled to Chicago, where she performed in a variety of places hoping that she'd one day be discovered. In 2009, she auditioned for the ninth season of American Idol and got her big break. She impressed the judges, made it through to Hollywood, and ended as runner-up to winner Lee DeWyze. In December, 2010 Bowersox's debut album Farmer's Daughter came out on on Jive Records; she stopped by WFUV for a studio session with Rita Houston and took the WFUV Pop Quiz.
Aside from gear, instruments or your band, you don't go on the road without?
Insulin.
What song do you wish you've written?
“Black River” by Amos Lee. It’s just a gorgeous song that touches my spirit.
Who would you like to record one of your songs, dead or alive?
That’s much too big of a question for me to answer in the short amount of time that we have. I’d have to think about that for a while.
What song would you sing in the shower but never in public?
“Kiss” by Prince [sings with Rita].
What's the first album you bought?
Jewel’s Pieces of you.
Someone finds your iPod and hits shuffle. What song do you hope does not come up?
I don’t think there is one.
What's your favorite Bob Dylan Song?
There are so many. I've got to say all of them.
Do you have any hidden talents?
I like to knit [shows her colorful socks] I can also flare my nostrils.
Do you cook?
I do, but not well. I tried to make bean soup out of the leftover Christmas ham, and it was a no go. Nobody ate it -- it didn’t even smell good. My husband does most of the cooking.
What's the biggest misconception your fans or the media have about you?
I've read a few things, and it seems common that people thought I was arrogant on American Idol. I guess I’m sure of myself, but I wouldn't go that far. There’s a fine line there. I’m pretty level-headed.
What wacky thing would you do if you had the time, guts or resources?
I’d like to try base jumping, it’s like hand gliding. I’ve been skydiving before but base jumping is probably a risk I won’t take until my son is grown, he needs Mommy right now.
